Since I’m on a mission to try all sorts of new things on this journey to a healthier life I bought a Groupon for a local Yoga studio a month or two ago. Since I’m never home I didn’t get to try it yet until this week. The beauty of living next to a town like Montclair is that there area bunch of studios offering everything from spinning to yoga to boot camp (never going to happen). So I looked at Yoga Montclair’s schedule and picked a class that sounded like I could handle it on a day that fit into my schedule.
I asked my friend, Lori, if she wanted to come along since she mentioned she had a gift card for the same studio and she’s sort of become my fitness buddy in the last few months. It’s so awesome to have someone to try this stuff with! She was game so I called the studio to see about signing up for this class. The woman I spoke to couldn’t have been more friendly so I was even more excited about the experience.
I dusted off my yoga mat and met up with Lori on Wednesday night to give this class a shot. Once again, the girl who helped us check in was super nice and made us feel welcome. The instructor also came over and introduced herself to us and everyone else in the class since she was filling in for the regular teacher. This place didn’t seem so bad and they had free parking. This might work afterall.
The class got started with a bit of the teacher talking about yoga and the spiritual end of practicing. At that point I was a little anxious to get going since I didn’t really know what I was in for, so I’m not sure a paid a whole lot of attention to what she said. At least I’m honest. Soon enough we were doing poses and before I knew it the class was over.
Lori said it was a pretty basic class which was fine since I hadn’t done this in years and I’m not exactly ready to stand on my head while chanting. It was certainly good for someone like me who is clueless. I didn’t feel like it was overwhelming, but I didn’tfeel like I didn’t get a workout either. It was a nice in the middle pace and skill set.
The last couple times I had taken years ago back when I lived in an apartment (I’ll have owned my condo five years in December eek!), I was super sore the next day since it was a new set of muscles being used. I was pretty concerned that I wouldn’t be able to move, let alone workout the next day. To my pleasant surprise I felt fine when I woke up the next morning!
I have four more classes at this studio on my Groupon so I’ll be back for sure. I’ll try to work it in once a week for the next month. We also just bought another Groupon for a studio in the next town over for yoga and bellydancing classes. That ought to be entertaining. But at least I’ll get to keep taking yoga if I continue to like it at a reasonable price.
