Fitness Friday: The Battle of the Bulge

I’ve been falling down on the blogger job a bit lately, but I’m going to try to get back on tack with this post.  Being home more often has definitely helped me get back into a workout routine. When I go to the gym today to do a little cardio and lift some weights it will be my sixth workout for the week. It’s about bloody time I got into the swing of things. It’s nice to feel like you are winning the fitness battles even when the scale battle hasn’t been so nice to me lately. I’m resolved to just keep plugging away because I know I’ll eventually see the results I’m looking for even though weight has been coming off in small increments lately.

So what was I up to this week?  A fair amount of walking both outside and at the gym.  I’m always sad to see summer go (this is my last weekend at the beach), but I really love the fall.  And now that I’m living a more active lifestyle I’m so happy to have some cooler weather to walk and run in.  When I went for a walk on Wednesday morning at about 6:30 I could see my breath! I’m not sure I’m quite ready for that big of a temperature drop but the afternoon highs have been nothing short of perfect.

On Thursday night I did a run/walk training session with the Jeff Galloway app and tackled 3.25 miles. Woohoo a 5k without it actually being a race! And to boot I felt really fantastic afterward. Not feeling like you’re going to die is always a sign of improved fitness, no? I’m actually getting somewhere with all of this.

This week also brought new running shoes. It is insane that I got as excited about sneakers as I would about a fabulous new pair of heels.  This is my life now and I’m on board.  The girl who sold me the shoes at Fleet Feet Montclair (which is an amazing store and if you have one near you, you should check it out) encouraged me to join there running group that meets each week.  I think I’m going to have to check it out soon.

Lori and I met up for yoga again this week, too.  We went to the same studio, but with a different teacher.  Well, this chick kicked my ass.  I really felt like I got a workout this time. I was really worried I was going to be super sore the following day, but  it really wasn’t too bad.  Don’t get me wrong I could feel it, but I could move with ease and I could still bang out my 3.25 miles the following day. I have decided I really like yoga, but it will never be something I’m in love with. I’d like to keep it up for a while to see if it sticks for a bunch of reasons, but I’m not sure if it will be something I do for the rest of my little life.

I’m still having trouble finding the motivation to lift weights more regularly.  Something has got to happen there in the coming weeks for sure.  With a more regular schedule I have no excuse not to get my sorry butt to the gym to do some resistance work. Part of my problem is being tired or hungry after work and just not being able to push through my workout.  I’m going to have to find ways around this to get myself going on the weight training front.  Making sure to have a good snack at the office before my post work gym sessions will be key, me thinks.

I think that will do it for this week.  I’m pretty pleased with my efforts this week, but there is always room for improvement.  Next week will hopefully bring more running/walking, another yoga session, and getting my ass to the gym to lift.  I’m also really looking forward to my last run along the beach for a while on Sunday.
